NT Writing & Editing
I offer three broad services: writing, editing and proofreading.
Let me take the stress out of your next writing project. My professional writing style will engage your readers and communicate your ideas and messages clearly and effectively. I’ll undertake thorough research and tailor my writing to the needs of your audience. I can also do plain English rewrites of your technical documents.
Whether you need a basic copyedit or a substantive structural edit, I’m here to help. With my accreditation from the Institute of Professional Editors, you can be confident that I’ll add a professional polish to your next publication. I’ll carefully check spelling and grammar, charts and tables, references, internal consistency, structure, accuracy and clarity. I’ll also check that the style and tone are appropriate for your intended readers.
Proofreading is an important step in preparing your document for publication. Once a designer has typeset your document, I’ll carefully check the proofs for any errors or inconsistencies in the text and layout. I can cross-check the proofs against an earlier marked-up version of your document to make sure the designer has taken in all changes correctly.
Take a look at my clients to see how my high-quality services have added value to a wide range of online and print publications.
I’ve written, edited and proofread diverse documents for my clients, covering a multitude of topics. My projects have included:
I love writing and language, and I bring this passion to my work as a freelance writer and editor.
Since establishing NT Writing & Editing in 2008, I’ve earned a reputation as a skilled wordsmith and a reliable and flexible editor.
In 2009, I was recognized as an Accredited Editor by the Institute of Professional Editors. I’m also a professional member of the Society of Editors (NSW) and have attended a number of the society’s professional development workshops. I also attended national editors conferences in Sydney (2011) and Canberra (2015).
Before going freelance, I had a 14-year diplomatic career with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). I served at headquarters in Canberra as well as in Warsaw, Paris and Moscow.
I honed my writing skills in DFAT, producing high-quality policy reports, submissions to ministers, official correspondence, diplomatic dispatches, media releases, publicity material and speeches.
I later worked in marketing at the Sydney-based Export Finance and Insurance Corporation—the Australian Government’s export credit agency—where I further developed my corporate writing skills.
My keen interest in foreign languages adds to my understanding and appreciation of English grammar and expression. I achieved fluency in French, Russian and Polish and learned the basics of Mandarin, Vietnamese and Lao.
‘I have worked closely with Nick on a wide range of publications and writing and editing assignments. He is a first-rate writer and a meticulous editor. He has a clear and concise writing style which he uses to convey effectively complex messages and themes to diverse audiences. Nick is highly reliable, always meets deadlines and produces work that is of a consistently high standard.’
— Chris Freeman, former director of media strategies, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
My diverse clients share a desire for clear, accurate and effective writing.
I’ve written and edited high-profile documents for businesses, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, publishers, a foreign policy think-tank, academics and other clients.
I work either directly with clients, or as an associate with leading publishing and communications firms.
Wilton Hanford Hanover (WHH) is the Australian Government communications specialist. In association with this leading firm, I edited a best practice regulation handbook, the Australia in the Asian Century white paper, a draft energy white paper, the Gonski report on school funding, and an Empowered Communities report on Indigenous empowerment.
I’ve also edited documents such as policy reports, corporate plans, discussion and consultation papers, issues papers, frameworks, handbooks and guidelines for diverse WHH clients, including the federal departments of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Education, Finance, Social Services, Industry and Human Services, as well as Austrade, the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency, and the ACT Independent Competition and Regulatory Authority.
I’ve joined expert WHH editorial teams to edit regulatory guidelines for the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority and reports on remote service delivery to Indigenous communities.
In addition, I’ve edited and proofread annual reports (in full or in part) for numerous WHH clients: Austrade, the Department of Defence, the Department of Finance, the Department of Employment, the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, the Australian Public Service Commission, the Australian Financial Security Authority, the Murray–Darling Basin Authority and the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority.
